I don't have a number pad on my laptop. Is there a way to make Alt+Num characters without it?

My Dell Inspiron 1545 does not have a number pad on it. My 1501 had a number lock key which enabled a number pad, but this one doesn't. Anyway is there some trick that I can do to make the special Alt+Num characters?
